Fathers Day is one of the best days in the year. It is a time to reflect on the time we spent with our fathers and also a time for fathers (or fathers to be) to assess their contribution to their children's lives.

My focus today is on the best father in the entire world. He loved his children so much that he sent his only son to die for them. No other father in the entire universe has such love for their children. He has given everyone the opportunity to be his child also by simply believing in his awesome son. He is my father and I have an awesome big brother who I will spend eternity with. What about you? Did you accept His Son as yet? If not, what are you waiting for?

Mothers' Day

Parents I encourage you to treasure your children. They are God's gifts to us and we have a responsibility to protect and nurture them until they become adults. Too many unborn children are being murdered by their parents. As far as I am concerned this is cold blooded murder since these are helpless little ones who my never have asked to be here, but yet they are deprived the opportunity to make a difference in this world. He or she may have become the President of the United States, the doctor with the cure to AIDS, cancer, diabetes or some other disease. Why not give them a chance to be who they were created to be.

Meeting Our Needs

This morning there was a toddler who kept crying profusely. I thought she was crying because she was hungry or sleepy so I gave her some food, but she refused to eat. At this point I was becoming very impatient, frustrated and even irritated because the crying had not ceased. I reached down towards her and gently lifted her towards me. Instantly the crying ceased. It was then I realized that all she really wanted was attention. She wanted to be assured that she was loved and cared for. As soon as she was assured that she was cared for she became content.

This child is so much like adults. We purchase the fancy house, fantastic car or beautiful clothes, but in reality all we really need is attention. We need to be seen by other people and to be assured that we are important in their eyes. Of course, we get those material things because we need them too, but many times we are trying to keep up with others so that we can be in their circle. Let's take the time to let other people know that they are important to us. We tend to get too preoccupied with things that should not take priority in our lives too often.

Creativity is evident from a tender age. Here children from Northern Korea are seen playing guitars and enjoying the rhythm at the same time. I believe children should develop their talent at an early age. When they grow older they master the skills and perfect them. Train up a child when he or she is still young.

It is already near the end of the third month in 2011 even though it seemed like just yesterday that the year started. Whatever we think about regularly becomes a habit. Habits help to formulate our character. Our character determines our personality. Therefore it is a good idea to cultivate healthy thoughts regularly. We should choose to think about eating the right foods, exercising and getting enough rest daily. Our thoughts should always be positive and we should resist the temptation to get angry or upset easily.

Back to School

It's that time of year that children either dread or eagerly anticipate. The younger children may look forward to meeting new friends, especially if they are just starting school. The older children may resent losing all the leisure time they had all summer. One thing to note is that there is excitement in the air. Parents and children may have different feelings, but many decisions need to be made during this period.

Parents need to be careful in choosing before and after care. Aftercare should provide activities that the children can learn and enjoy at the same time. Since teachers expect children to sit quietly and listen to them most of the school day, aftercare should have a different approach. Children should have a hands on approach which guarantees some level of adventure and excitement for them in aftercare. Each week they should learn a new skill and they should be able to apply these skills to everyday life. Aftercare should therefore be complementing the school day. It should be a time that children should look forward to like an adventure that they do not want to end. In other words, insist on getting more for your money. Watching television and other sedentary activities should be minimized.

The Winter Blizzard of February 2010

This February it seems like all the states of the United States of America experienced a harsh winter. It seems like everyone had to take out those winter jackets which had been dormant for some time in some states. I understand that every state had snow, even those states which never had states before.

The metropolitan area of Washington D.C. had so much snow that even the federal government was shut down for at least three consecutive days. Schools were closed for one whole week. In Maryland even many child care facilities had to be closed as a result of the blizzard of 2010. Regardless children faithfully attended Creative Family Child Care and they were anxious to go outside to make a snowman.

One child was brave enough to try to make a snowman without his gloves. At first it seemed like he was enjoying it, but he soon gave up.

Here he is making it very clear that he has had enough. Everyone agreed. Then they all scrambled inside.

Do Not Forget Haiti

As we attend to our daily activities let us pause to think of the Haitians who have been injured, lost relatives, lost their houses or lost everything. It is hard to understand the suffering. We can help by giving financially. We can also help by praying. Do not forget the children. They need our help.

The First Five Years

Children have the potential to learn a great deal from birth to five years old. They tend to mimic adults and they can learn in a relatively short period of time things that it will take adults a longer time to master. The first five years are the best years to learn. Children should be given the opportunity to develop their gifts and they should be stimulated to learn the most they can academically. The dawn of another year!

Did you have fun cheering in the new year? I know I did. It is hard to believe that 2009 has actually ended, and we are now in a new year, 2010. Hopefully, the economy will improve, and we will all have a blessed year. Regardless, I suggest that each of us be more thrifty, and that we do all that is possible to save more. Even though 2010 comes with so many promises, we all need to be wise.

The Winter Storm of 2009

We just had our first real winter snow this weekend. It is a reminder that Christmas is here. I am sure children in the Metro area are having fun making snowmen, sledding and participating in snow fights. In fact, I am tempted to make my own snowman right now. As you enjoy the snow, try to avoid any skids. Walk on the crunchy white stuff. Enjoy the sights and the sounds. Even more important, have a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!

It is the Christmas season and many parents are trying to find ideal gifts for their children. I advise parents of children who are two to three years old to choose educational products for Christmas gifts.

I highly recommend the doodle board which is manufactured by Little Tikes. It is relatively inexpensive and it gives children the opportunity to explore drawing and creativity while they play and learn at the same time. In addition, it helps to initiate and develop writing skills. They develop their fine motor skills and learn to grip the writing implement. An added bonus is that there will be no need to constantly purchase paper since the board is reusable. The writing implement is connected to the board, so it is always available with the board.

We are approaching the end of a calendar year and the beginning of a new one. As we anticipate great things, we need to plan to make 2010 a productive year.

Some three and four year old children may be starting school in the fall of 2010. It is imperative that parents make every effort to have these children adequately prepared for school. It is very important that children engage in activities that exercise the muscles in their fingers from a very early age. This helps them to learn as early as possible to hold a pencil correctly. They also develop the skill of having a firm grip which is necessary for writing to take place.

Coloring, drawing and writing are exciting activities for toddlers. They love to create things by drawing. They are fascinated by various colors. Crayons and water paint can be used to teach them to identify different colors. However, they are more interested in being creative. They want to draw. They like to use a variety of colors as well. This is exciting for them.

I recommend that parents purchase a doodle pad for their preschoolers (even toddlers) so that they get as much practice as possible drawing and coloring. Those activities are prerequisites for writing. The advantage of the doodle pad is that it eliminates the need to purchase paper and writing implements. It is therefore cost effective and earth friendly.

I suggest that children be taught to write numbers before they are introduced to writing letters. Numbers are easier to write and they develop the concept of numbers quicker than letters.

Early Childhood Education

Parents should provide tools for children to learn to read and write prior to attending school. Some parents depend on the child care providers or teachers to provide these tools. Regardless, children should at least know how to read and write by their first day at school. This is not impossible. It takes careful planning and discipline on the part of parents and children.

I highly recommend that parents purchase this tool so that their children can get adequate practice in drawing, coloring and writing. This practice helps develop their fine motor skills in preparation for many classroom activities.

Focus on the Children

I am the mother of four and I was just reflecting on how children grow so quickly. Three of my children are already grown, and they love to remind me that they are now adults. My youngest is already sixteen, and I wonder when did time pass by. Unfortunately, I can never turn back the hands of time. What I can do, however, is to reflect on the things I did learn when my children were younger and share those thoughts with parents of younger children.

Children can learn almost anything in the years from birth to age five. They are like sponges. This explains why in some countries, children learn many languages before they are five years old, even though they regularly communicate with only one language.

Unfortunately, in many countries, children are not expected to start school until they are at least five years old. Meanwhile they are being influenced by their environment whether it is good or bad.

I think the best way to prepare children for school is to teach them the basics of reading and writing. Any parent can do this.
